Read moreAt the young age of 15, Antonio Kusanovic Jeric left Croatia and began a new life at the end of the world, far from home, here in Patagonia. In 1926, his son Antonio Kusanovic Senkovic was born, and would follow in his father’s footsteps.
Antonio Kusanovic Jeric bought the Cerro Paine Hacienda lands with plans to continue the family ranching tradition. The diverse, wide open and unpopulated lands of Patagonia were ideal for cattle herds, and the ranch used the land exclusively for this for decades. Over time, the Kusanovic family grew their herd to over 600 cattle grazing on this land.
As word of mouth spread of Patagonia, and Torres del Paine became more widely known with its three enormous granite peaks towering in the background, Antonio and his wife Amor Eliana Marusic began to offer a bed and breakfast to visitors. They renovated part of their ranch, and built nine rooms and a restaurant, making way for what would become known as the Hotel Las Torres.
Backpackers were the most common type of adventurer to come to Torres del Paine, coming in search of an intense connection with nature. The first refuge for hikers built was the Las Torres Refuge, known today as the Refugio Norte, followed by the Cuernos and Chilean Refuges.
As outside interest in Torres del Paine grew, the Hotel grew as well. In 2001, it became known as the Hotel Torres Patagonia, reflecting the rustic and authentic nature of the place itself and its cultural heritage, which are proudly shared to those who visit to get a glimpse of life in Patagonia.
Focusing on the commitment to the preservation and long-term sustainability of this incomparable land full of natural resources, the family decided to move the entire herd of cattle from Torres del Paine. This was the first big step towards sustainable tourism, inspired by the culture and the landscapes of Patagonia.
