Holistic Pasture Approach

Holistic Pasture Approach

The pastures surrounding the hotel are part of a holistic approach to grazing management for our horses.

The baqueanos, or Patagonian cowboys, who care for our 190 horses are expertly trained and passionate about the animals they care for. Every day, these noble four-legged animals are released to roam freely in different areas of the reserve that are selected so that none of the land is overused. Likewise, our baqueanos are careful to use different horses for different jobs, depending on their condition and training. For example, the more docile horses that are comfortable with people may be better for horseback riding, while the less docile horses, or horses that don’t care to be ridden are better used to transport supplies to the Refugio Chileno sector. Horse care and stable operations are important aspects of ensuring that our herds are sustainable, and don’t cause damage to native fauna and flora.
