Learn about our reforestation efforts in Torres del Paine

Forest fires in Torres del Paine have left a serious mark on the green mantle of Patagonia, which has prompted our commitment to reforestation. To this end, we’ve planted close to 40,000 native lenga beech trees that have restored the natural landscape of several hectares that were badly affected by the fires.

Reserva Las Torres, working through its NGO, AMA Torres del Paine, has been deeply concerned about the impact of forest fires in the region–particularly within the park. They have been working on reforestation initiatives to address the issue. Most recently was a successful initiative in 2016, when they opened a call to the public for donations in order to acquire a large number of lenga trees to be planted in the park. The result was nearly 16,000 lenga trees which were acquired and planted by nearly 1,000 volunteers.

The lenga tree as a primary actor

The lenga beech tree is unique in the face of forest fires. After a fire has swept through, the lenga does not resprout and recover. As maintaining the local flora is a long-term task, knowing that we never can tell what type of crises the park wildlife may suffer, we’ve developed a forestry nursery to keep a supply of saplings for reforestation where needed.

Growing lenga

Today, we have close to 10,000 lenga beeches growing in our nursery. We also have a seed reserve, keeping a collection lenga seeds as a reserve in case we need to plant more trees in the future.
